UNDERSTANDING
Eid al Kabir: NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT WISHES
Eid al
Kabir (known as Eid al-Adha elsewhere), or "Festival of Sacrifice",
is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to
commemorate the willingness of Abraham (ʾIbrāhīm) to sacrifice his son as an
act of obedience to God, before God
intervened to provide him with a ram to sacrifice instead. A ram, goat, sheep,
cow or camel is sacrificed, with the family eating part of the animal and
donating the rest to the poor. The festival is celebrated on the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month in
the Islamic calendar.
What do people do?
At Eid al-Adha, many
Muslims make a special effort to pray and listen to a sermon at a mosque. They
also wear new clothes, visit family members and friends and may symbolically
sacrifice an animal in an act known asqurbani. This represents the animal that Ibrahim sacrificed in the
place of his son.
Background
Ibrahim,
known as Abraham in the Christian and Jewish traditions, was commanded by God
to sacrifice his adult son. He obeyed and took him to Mount Moriah. Just as he
was to sacrifice his son, an angel stopped him and gave him a ram to sacrifice
in place of his son. Some people dispute that the son of sacrifice was Isaac
(Isḥāq). Regardless, these events are remembered and celebrated at Eid al-Adha.
The
Islamic calendar is based on observations of the moon and the length of a particular
month can vary between years. For this reason, predicted dates of Eid al-Adha
may be corrected at the start of the month of Dhul Hijja. This is around 10
days before the start of the festival.
Eid al KAbir WISHES FROM
THE GOVERNMENT:
President Muhammed Buhari has in a message
felicitated with Muslims on this year’s Eid-El-Kabir celebrations and further
assured Nigerians that the days of Boko Haram insurgents are numbered.
The President congratulated all Nigerian Muslims who are
currently in the Saudi Arabia to participate in the rites of the Hajj. Buhari
has also directed the Armed Forces and national security agencies to provide
maximum security across the nation during Eid-El-Kabir prayers and
celebrations, especially in areas most vulnerable to terrorist attacks
Also the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has urged Muslim faithful
and the citizenry in general, to make the fear of God the watchword in their
lives. In a goodwill message on the occasion of the Eid-el-Kabir, the
Senate president said the event symbolised the fear of Allah and the desire of
man to always comply with the wish of his creator. This, he said, was
exemplified by the life of Prophet Ibrahim.
The
governor said that the gesture was to cushion the effects of soaring prices of
goods
Lalong,
who disclosed this through his Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Yusuf Hawaja, said
that his administration would always make the welfare of the citizens the
priority of his government.
Hawaja
spoke to newsmen after presenting foodstuffs and a cow to the Jos prison
inmates and Aisha Mana Orphanage Home in Jos on Wednesday.
He said
that as part of the tradition of government in the state, he was giving out
some rams and rice for the Muslims to celebrate in happiness.
Hawaja
said, “The Lalong administration will not relent until he achieves his goals of
ensuring the welfare of his people. More good things will come and we will
continue to render services to the people.”
